Combining word and sound is an ancient practice. The subject matter and sonic environment may vary but it is always compelling. We will ruminate about home, make the mundane more meaningful, witness an imagined dialogue between two Black geniuses, and experience how sound becomes communication. This evening will also feature a World Premiere by one of our esteemed composers.

From solo to quartet, this is a night of small ensembles with no electronic assistance. Each composer shows what is possible with the manipulation of acoustics and instrumental physics, defying visual expectations and embracing the beauty of compositional imagination.

MATA Artist-In-Residence Headline Concert

A one-of-a-kind building still stands in Brooklyn today. It was originally a public school used exclusively for the education of Black students during segregation. For a time, the building held the name Colored School No. 3, and tonight, school will be back in session as we revisit three historic lessons and what they tell us about our country. What is America?
