Each event $15/$10 students and seniors, $50 festival pass

MATA is proud to present its annual festival of new music by emerging artists from around the world.  Over four nights, audiences will hear music by some of today's best up-and-coming young composers performed by So Percussion, NOW Ensemble, The Knights, Ne(x)tworks, Bing and Ruth and Sawako.   Under the new leadership of Executive Director Missy Mazzoli and Artistic Director Christopher McIntyre -- dynamic composer/performers in their own right -- MATA's programming is more audacious and exciting than ever.  The 2009 MATA Festival features six world premieres (including four MATA commissions), two U.S. premieres, and four New York premieres.

This year's commissionees were chosen from hundreds of hopefuls residing in 20 countries.  They include surrealistic collagist Nicole Lizée (Canada) and puckish provocateur Andrew Hamilton (Ireland) – rising stars in their respective territories who are essentially unknown here.  Closer to home, intimate minimalist David Moore (NYC) and electronic soundscaper Mike Vernusky (Austin, TX) bring their fresh, original voices to MATA commissions.

AFTER THE KNIGHTS SHOW... we invite you to stay at (Le) Poisson Rouge for a very special performance by MATA Alum Carla Kihlstedt's band 2 FOOT YARD! 2 Foot Yard will be performing with members of the Knights Orchestra.

2 Foot Yard is a songwriting collective (Carla Kihlstedt- violin, voice, Marika Hughes- cello, voice, Shahzad Ismaily- drums, guitar). With their willfully limited instrumentation, they create intimate yet rich and dramatic worlds that elegantly maneuver between art song, rock song, and pop song. Their first cd was released on Tzadik, and their most recent, Borrowed Arms, was self-released and is available at www.CDBaby.com

They will be joined on several of their songs by New York's most exciting young string quartet, Brooklyn Rider. (www.brooklynrider.com)

Panel Discussion
>>FREE<<

Richard Carrick - Co-Director and pianist, Either/Or; MATA alumni

Moderator: Chris McIntyre
- MATA Artistic Director; trombonist, Ne(x)tworks

One of the most powerful currents in today's concert music scene is the renewed prominence of composer/performers -- creators who interpret their own music, bringing new life to a once-dormant tradition. The 2009 MATA Festival features a number of such works, most often in groups committed to presenting the work of their ensemble colleagues.

Moderated by MATA Artistic Director Chris McIntyre, PLAYING IN THE BAND will informally examine current trends in the field, their relationship to past attitudes, and how they inform the panelists' work. In addition to the artists taking part in the 2009 Festival (Sawako, Dufallo, Dancigers, and McIntyre), the panel includes MATA alumni Annie Gosfield and Richard Carrick, both of whom have forged successful careers writing and playing their own music.
